Church History in a Nutshell (Videos)

2009 June 26

I found this website that I think is just awesome.

I’ve been trying to brush up on my church history, but I’ve specifically been looking for two criteria.  First, I wanted to find some videos, rather than reading material.  Second, I wanted to find something that focused on the “forest,” rather than the “trees.”  Just a broad overview of the big-picture, so then I can go in and fill in the details myself later, with more detailed sources.

Well, one day when I wasn’t even looking for it, it fell into my lap!  The site is called “HeLives.com,” and has a handful of similar-style resources.

There are 8 videos, each spanning only about 5 minutes each.  They include:

—Why study Church History?
—Introduction
—Early Church (Patristic)
—Medieval
—Early Modern
—Late Modern 1
—Late Modern 2
—Postmodern

But the best part about the videos is the formatOn the site when you play the video, there are three window screens playing simultaneously.  The first is simply a video of the teacher speaking (Dr. John Hannah). The second is a scrolling transcript of his words, so you can follow along reading if you want.  But the most interesting window pane is the third, which is a visual “slide-show”-type accompaniment to his teaching.  It’s a really great format, and hopefully we can see more things like this in the future!

The videos are so short that you can watch them one at a time, in little 5-minute blocks throughout the day.

And the cherry on top: it’s free!

I believe I shared the link before, but Covenant Seminary offers the audio lectures of just over 20 of their master’s level classes at their Worldwide Classroom website. The first class is on ancient and medieval church history (35 lectures of about 45 mins each) and the second class is reformation and modern church history (37 lectures of about 45 mins each). You can also download the professors notes in PDF format.

Now, of course, this isn’t as cool as video, and it is a little more in depth. But it is probably worth while. In the end, I did not take the 2 classes for my MATS, so I do want to go back and study those two classes in the very near future.

Yeah man, I love the Worldwide Classroom, that thing is so awesome. I’ve listened to one or two.

I knew about that all along while I was searching, but I intentionally was trying to find something other than the Worldwide Classroom, only because it is so epicly awesome that it gets into all the details, hehe.

That’s a good thing, of course! But I was just trying to find a more “forest over the trees” approach, at least at first.

I think the Worldwide Classroom is the perfect “Level 2″ to this one here, as “Level 1,” hehe =D.

Yes, I did sense that you wanted more of an overview-survey type teachings for church history. Good stuff.
