Jonathan Edwards’s Personal Commentary Forthcoming

January 5, 2009

Yale University Press is publishing Jonathan Edwards’s famous “Blank Bible.”

About the book:

…the ‘Blank Bible’ was Edwards’s self-made study Bible. He unbound a Bible he had received, placed in between each page a blank sheet of paper, and then had the volume rebound. This allowed [Edwards] to make notes on the text as he went. These notes contain his own observations/reflections on the text as well as notes from other sources, in addition to references to his thoughts elsewhere in his writings. No doubt there are many treasures yet to be mined from [Edwards] in this new volume.

You can also view portions online.

Jonathan Edwards is still widely considered the greatest theologian America has produced.  His theology remains highly studied and cited, so this will be an outstanding contribution to Edwards-scholarship.

I found one site online that had instructions for a “Do-it-Yourself-Blank-Bible,” which I thought was pretty cool =D.  I am tempted to do it for novelty’s sake, but then I’d feel bad if most of the pages stayed blank ;-) .  Besides, I’m too digital-ized to use actual “writing utensils” anymore.  Those are so stone-age.
